Possible Resolution to the Nvlddmkm.sys Error in Vista

This potential fix pertains to machines that have Nvidia video cards and any version of the Vista operating system.

(Obligatory disclaimer: If you choose to attempt the manual fix, you do so at your own risk.)

I know that the nvlddmkm.sys error has been extremely troublesome for a lot of our customers--for some, it resets the display, while for others, it can cause blue screens. There is no "official" fix for the problem from either Microsoft or Nvidia, but we may have a solution that will work for the 8 Series video cards (8600, 8800, etc).

Be advised, though, that we can't guarantee that it will work for you, and it is not the permanent resolution to the problem--merely a workaround to preserve your sanity until the official fix comes out.

Instructions (Series 8 cards only):
  • Go to Windows\System32\Drivers and rename nvlddmkm.sys to nvlddmkm.sys.old
  • Go to the nVidia directory and find the nvlddmkm.sy_ and copy it to Windows\System32\Drivers
  • Using the CMD window, change the directory to C:\windows\system32\drivers
  • Type: expand.exe nvlddmkm.sy_ nvlddmkm.sys (There is a space between exe. And the n and the underscore and the n.)
  • Hit enter. The new expanded file will now be in the Drivers folder and the system can be rebooted.
For series 7 cards, it has been proposed that using driver version 97.37 might resolve the issue, but we have not tested that in-house.

Special thanks to Ellen Reardon for researching the issue.

Drivefix--Where are my opticals?
Run into an issue where your DVD/CD drives disappear from your “My Computer” folder? This issue seems to happen at random, despite XP or Vista installations of the Windows operating systems. Fixing this is easy; simply download the registry key found here, unzip and restart your computer. Viola! The drives have returned!

Aw, MOM--Error in systems running ATI Catalyst
We've seen an unusual error popping up on occassion in relation to ATI's Catalyst driver suite, version 7.2. It happens universally in both XP and Vista environments.

The error points to a problem with MOM.exe--an executable that has the same unfortunate name as a virulent piece of malware. (If you get a MOM.exe error and you don't have the ATI catalyst installed, then you've likely got the malware.)

ATI is aware of the problem and the engineers are looking at implementing a resolution. For the time being, ATI advises customers who receive this error message uninstall Catalyst version 7.2 and put version 7.1 on the system instead.
